[Dr. Tomek] "In knee replacement surgery, the cartilage of the knee is replaced by a metal and plastic implant.
The end of the thighbone is covered with an implant.
The top of the shinbone is covered, and in between there's a plastic wafer that provides a new surface for smooth bending and straightening of the knee as well as twisting.
This model doesn't show it, but normally the kneecap would be sitting in front of the knee, and it would also have a small plastic disc to replace the damaged cartilage of the knee cap."
